Des policiers dispersent violemment une réunion de journalistes à Mbuji-Mayi

(JED/IFEX) - Une assemblée générale réunissant une centaine de journalistes a été violemment dispersée, le 31 mai 2007 à Mbuji-Mayi, capitale de la province du Kasaï Oriental (Centre de la RD Congo) par une vingtaine de policiers conduits par le commandant urbain de la Police, Jean-Claude Kabeya alias "Shegué". Des journalistes ont été battus et l'un d'eux, Luboya Nokia de la Radio Mont Carmel (RMC), a été grièvement blessé et interné à l'Hôpital Bonzola de Mbuji-Mayi. D'autres journalistes ont déclaré à Journaliste en danger (JED) avoir perdu dans ces échauffourés leur matériel de travail.
Une centaine de journalistes, tous médias confondus, s'étaient réuni en assemblée générale extraordinaire, le 31 mai à 14h30 (heure locale), au bar dit "La Primature" dans la commune de Diulu. Cette réunion avait pour objectif, selon des informations obtenues par JED, de suspendre le coordonnateur local de l'Union de la presse du Congo (UNPC) qui se serait rendu coupable de mauvaise gestion de l'Union et de malversations financières.
Au cours de cette réunion, les journalistes ont constaté qu'il y avait des non journalistes dans la salle. Ils leurs ont demandé de sortir. C'est juste après avoir mis à la porte ces intrus, que certains journalistes ont identifié comme étant des agents des services de sécurité, que deux Jeeps de la police ont fait irruption au bar. Le commandant de l'expédition a ordonné à ses hommes de disperser tous les journalistes de la salle.
JED est abasourdie par cette intervention illégale de la police pour disperser une réunion pacifique et la violence gratuite dont ont fait preuve les policiers. JED rappelle que le droit d'association et de réunion est garanti par la Constitution de la RD Congo Afin de mettre fin à l'impunité dont bénéficient des policiers, JED demande au Ministre de l'Intérieur, décentralisation et sécurité du territoire, le général Denis Kalume Numbi, et à l'Inspecteur général de la Police, le général Daniel Katsuva, de déférer devant la justice le commandant Jean-Claude Kabeya dit "Shegué" et tous les policiers ayant pris part à cette énième bavure policière qui a violé des droits garantis aux citoyens par la Constitution de la République.

Police violently break up meeting of journalists in Mbuji-Mayi

(JED/IFEX) - A gathering of some 100 journalists on 31 May 2007 in Mbuji-Mayi, capital of East Kasai province, was violently broken up by police led by Commander Jean-Claude Kabeya, also known as "Shegué". Journalists were beaten and one of them, Luboya Nokia of Radio Mont Carmel, was seriously injured and taken to Bonzola Hospital in Mbuji-Mayi. Other journalists told JED that they lost work-related equipment during the attack.
About 100 journalists representing all types of media outlets had gathered for an extraordinary general assembly on 31 May at 2:30 p.m. (local time) at a bar, "La Primature", in the Diulu neighbourhood. According to information obtained by JED, the goal of the meeting was to suspend the local coordinator of the Congo Press Union (Union de la presse du Congo, UNPC), who was reportedly guilty of badly managing the Union and of misappropriating funds.
During the meeting, the journalists noticed that there were non-journalists in the room, whom they asked to leave. It was just after these intruders, who had been identified as security service agents, were expelled from the meeting that police, who had arrived in two Jeeps, burst into the bar. The police commander ordered his men to disperse all the journalists in the room.
JED is shocked by this illegal police intervention to break up a peaceful meeting and by the gratuitous violence used by the officers. JED notes that the right to association and assembly is guaranteed by the country's Constitution.
To put an end to the impunity that police officers enjoy, JED asks the minister of the interior, decentralisation and territorial security, General Denis Kalume Numbi, and the general inspector of police, Daniel Katsuva, to prosecute Commander Jean-Claude Kabeya and all the police officers who took part in yet another shocking police operation, which violated the rights guaranteed to citizens by the Constitution of the republic.
