Suspect arrested in murder of young female TV presenter; RSF calls for thorough investigation

(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders has urged Afghan police to leave no stone unturned in investigating the 31 May 2007 murder of a popular young TV presenter, Shakiba Sanga Amaj, who worked for Pashtu-language channel Shamshad TV.
A man opened fire on the 22-year-old at point blank range at her familyhome in Kabul and two days later police arrested a suspect, Abdul Latif,from Ghazni in central Afghanistan, who had reportedly been hired to punishher for refusing to marry.
"Even if a family feud appears to be behind this cowardly killing, theauthorities should not overlook the profession and renown of the youngpresenter," the worldwide press freedom organisation said, offering itscondolences to the journalist's family and colleagues.
Her father, Mohammad Rabi Amaj, told the Pajwok news agency that hebelieved family members had paid Latif to kill his daughter. "Latif is ahired killer and a deviant. I pray to God that no other women are destroyedas Sanga was," he said.
The Pakistan-educated Shakiba Sanga Amaj was a well-liked presenter on the programme "Da Gudar Ghara" on Shamshad TV, headed by Wahid Nazari. She also worked as a reporter.
The case has echoes of that of Shaima Rezaee, a young presenter on privately-owned Tolo TV, murdered in Kabul in May 2005. Police have never cleared up the exact circumstances of the killing, which some people claimed was suicide (see IFEX alert of 24 May 2005).

(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters sans frontières demande à la police afghane de n'écarter aucune piste dans l'assassinat de Shakiba Sanga Amaj, jeune présentatrice de la chaîne en pachtou Shamshad TV.
"Si la vengeance familiale semble être le motif de ce lâche assassinat, les autorités ne doivent pas négliger le métier et la notoriété de la jeune présentatrice. Nous présentons par ailleurs nos condoléances à sa famille et ses collègues", a affirmé l'organisation.
Le 31 mai 2007 vers 19h00 (heure locale), un homme a tiré sur la jeunefemme, à bout portant, dans la maison familiale à Kaboul. La police aarrêté, le 2 juin, un premier suspect originaire de Ghazni (Centre), AbdulLatif, qui aurait été engagé pour punir la jeune femme d'avoir refusé de semarier. Selon le père de la victime, Mohammad Rabi Amaj, le suspect auraitété engagé par des membres de la famille de la journaliste pour la tuer."Latif est un tueur sous contrat et un homme déviant (. . .) Je prie Dieud'éviter que d'autres femmes comme Sanga soient détruites", a déclaréMohammad Rabi Amaj à l'agence de presse Pajwok.
Shakiba Sanga Amaj, âgée de 22 ans, était devenue une présentatricepopulaire du programme "Da Gudar Ghara" de la chaîne en pachtou ShamshadTV, dirigée par Wahid Nazari. Eduquée au Pakistan, elle réalisait égalementdes reportages.
Cette affaire rappelle celle de Shaima Rezaee, jeune présentatrice de lachaîne privée Tolo TV, assassinée en mai 2005 à Kaboul. La police n'ajamais éclairci les circonstances exactes de cet homicide, que certains ontqualifié de suicide (consulter l'alerte de l'IFEX du 24 mai 2005).
